A Little About Me

Hi, I’m Prescott Musler, owner of Mise en Place Wood Works.  The name of my company is based on what I loved about my first career and have brought to this new venture from my work as a chef.

I always liked building things as a kid, from forts in the woods with any scrap lumber I could find, to clocks and baseball bats in shop class in middle school.  During high school, I worked in restaurants and was studying architecture.  When I started college for architecture, I continued working in the kitchens and found myself pulled towards cooking.  I loved the pace and movement of the kitchen and realized that I would never be able to sit at a desk no matter how much I loved architecture.

So I left architecture school and went to The Culinary Institute of America.  After graduating from the CIA, I loved being a chef.  The name of my company comes from a principle of the culinary industry called “mise en place”, or “putting in place”.  This is the method of anticipating what you will need and making sure everything is ready and in place.  I thrived on the order of a well-stocked and well-run kitchen.  I loved walking though a quiet dining room because everyone was enjoying what I made for them.  But that feeling started to fade although I didn’t spend a lot of time thinking about it because at the same time, I was making a major change in my life.

My lovely wife (my high school sweetheart) and I started a family.  We knew we wanted one of us at home with the kids.  My hours in the restaurant weren’t very compatible with family time: that plus basic economics said I would be the one.  We are now blessed with two lovely gray-hair-causing kids who are now both in school full time.

During this time I started doing things around the house to save money, and that’s when I realized why my feelings for cooking started to fade.  I got a feeling of joy and pride when people came into our home and said “wow, you made that”.  It was the same feeling I used to get as a chef, but these objects didn’t vanish.  I began to think about turning that joy into a career once my kids were older.

I found woodworking to have everything I was looking for: design and staying power like architecture, with the active day and ability to work my hands like cooking.  I’m very excited to start this new chapter in my life going from at home dad to woodworker.  Please explore my gallery and see what you think.  I’d love to hear about your space, and build a piece perfect for you!
